Choose life in the TAActiveTAOfficerTravel

A life less ordinary

Are you looking for something extra from your life, a rewarding experience outside normal working hours? The Territorial Army (TA) offers the best of both worlds to people who find the idea of Army life appealing, but who are unable to make a full-time commitment. The TA forms one quarter of the British Army and trains people from all walks of life to be soldiers in their free time. You'll get unique opportunities to learn a wide range of valuable skills, meet new people and develop your personal fitness. Now that the TA has been integrated closer into the Army, there are plenty of chances to serve alongside the Regular Army in different theatres of operation around the world, including the Gulf, the Balkans and Afghanistan.

What can I do in the TA?

Your opportunities are extensive. Depending on the role of your unit, you could join the Infantry or Royal Armoured Corps or be a Gunner in the Royal Artillery. Alternatively, with the Royal Logistic Corps you could train as a Supply expert. You could also play a vital role in the Army Medical Services. In fact, you could be in virtually any branch of the Army, from engineers to clerks, or from communications to nurses.

Where do I train?

After you’ve completed Challenge East you’ll return to your unit. Most people train at their local TA centre. Alternatively, those with existing skills such as trained drivers, chefs, engineers and healthcare professionals, can train at central training facilities. For those with leadership potential, the TA runs its own officer training programme at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Who joins the TA?

TA members come from almost every social, occupational and cultural background imaginable. What they share is a keenness to develop new skills, meet new people and achieve goals outside the everyday. You'll find TA training brings you closer to others in situations where mutual respect, teamwork and friendship are the natural options.

What are the benefits?

The pay-off for all your hard work is that you'll not only be fitter, you'll also be more employable. And there's more than just military service and training. TA members enjoy a full and rewarding social life, largely due to the camaraderie they share. People you meet in the TA will often be more than just colleagues - they'll become friends for life.

How often do I train?

TA soldiers are expected to complete 27 or 19 days a year depending on your unit. By successfully completing Challenge East you will complete this annual requirement in just four to six weeks. Normally your annual training is made up of mid-week drill nights, some weekend training and an annual 15 day camp.
